Founded in 1978, the Minnesota Zoo exists to connect people, animals, and the natural world. Cutting-edge exhibits provide exciting experiences with animals and their habitats introducing guests to species from around the globe. Education programs engage audiences at the Zoo, throughout the region, and around world. Conservation programs protect endangered species and preserve critical ecosystems.

Conservation Efforts:

There are the following Endangered and Threatened species at the Minnesota Zoo: Amur leopard, Amur tiger, Asian brown tortoise, Asian small-clawed otter, Atlantic goliath grouper, Atlantic ridley sea turtle, Bactrian camel, Bald eagle, Bali mynah, Binturong, Blue poison dart frog, Blue-throated macaw, Boesemann’s rainbowfish, Canada lynx, Chilean pudu, Cotton-top tamarin, Dwarf crocodile, Giant clam, Goitered gazelle, Golden lion tamarin, Goral, Gray crowned crane, Gray wolf, Green-cheeked Amazon parrot, Green sea turtle, Helmeted curassow, Hyacinth macaw, Japanese macaque, Komodo monitor, Long-tailed chinchilla, Madagascar ground boa, Malayan tapir, Marbled teal, Matschie’s tree kangaroo, Military macaw, Mexican wolf, Northern seahorse, Przewalski’s horse, Puma, Pygmy loris, Queen triggerfish, Radiated tortoise, Red-breasted goose, Red panda, Red rainbowfish, Red ruffed lemur, Ring-tailed lemur, Sandtiger shark, Sea otter, Standing’s day gecko, Spur-thighed tortoise, Takin, Tri-color shark minnow, Victoria crowned pigeon, Visayan warty pig , White-cheeked gibbon, Wolverine, Woodland caribou, and Wood turtle.

Participation in SSPs (Species Survival Plans):

The Minnesota Zoological Garden participates in SSPs for the following species: Amur leopard, Amur tiger, Asian small-clawed otter, Black & White Colobus Monkey, Bali mynah, Cotton-top tamarin, DeBrazza’s monkey, Golden lion tamarin, Japanese macaque, Keel-billed toucan, Komodo monitor, Malayan tapir, Matschie’s tree kangaroo, Mexican gray wolf, Przewalski’s horse, Pygmy loris, Radiated tortoise, Red panda, Red ruffed lemur, Rhinoceros hornbill, Ring-tailed lemur, Visayan warty pig, and White-cheeked gibbon.
